New Toy
A couple of days ago I got a new toy – the Garmin Edge 305. It’s really a sport GPS build for bicyclists but I took the advice from a race paddler[danish] and went with the Edge instead of a model for runners. Included in the package was a heart monitor belt.
This evening I took the Shadow for a trip on my club’s normal race course: Start at the harbour and go to the first jetty down the coast and go back again. It’s approximately a trip of 4 km. Below is a graph showing the speed and heart beat data.

Total time: 19:52min Total distance: 3.83km Average speed: 11.6 km/h
Easy to spot that I had the wind in my back on the way out. The wind picked up just before the finish, which explains the dip in speed near the end. The time is exactly 2 minutes faster than my previous best time in my Inuk. I did struggle some with the balance as I was passed by motorboats.
Next up: Paddle some different kayaks at a fixed speed(say 10 km/h) and compare the heart beat curves.
Hi,
Im just curious why the Edge 305 was advised to you to be the better choice instead of the Forerunner 305? Any specific reasons why the Edge was preferred? The only advantage I see is the bigger display. Most paddlers over at surfski.info use the Forerunner 305. It works with gym and running regimens too.
Hi Mark
The reason was that the Edge’s supposedly is more customizable concerning the displayed data fields. I guess this is related to the bigger screen.
I normally only use a couple of fields to get nice big numbers. I do wish the loudspeaker was more powerful. When paddling upwind it can at times be hard to hear the beeps.
Best regards Peter
Peter,
Check out surfski.info and their review on the Forerunner 305. Surf Ski paddlers prefer that model as its a bit flexible. However, I totally agree with you with regards to the bigger screen.
I enjoy visiting your blog, provides a lot of insight and info on paddling.
