Dear German and Danish kayakers(any nationality really). I'd like to invite you to a challeging four days trip in Bælthavet, during the days 21th to 24th of May 2009.
In 2009 the trip is presented as an official trip by the Danish Canoe Federation and presented in the official program of the German Canoe Federation. The trip is graduated as an EPP 5 sea kayak training level activity. This simply means that the participants should consider themselves at a level where they could be training for an EPP 5 test.
The trip starts on the 21th of May at 9 o'clock in the small town Hov, about 24km south of the city Aarhus. From here on we'll decide which way to go around Samsø. Most likely the trip will include a number of long and exposed crossings. We'll be back in Hov in the afternoon of May the 20th.
I hope this tenth Samsø spring trip will turn out as interesting as the former trips:
This trip is for experienced and diciplined sea paddlers only. You must be in good paddling shape and feel safe at open sea in bad weather. The daily distances will be around 50km, but since we don't want to paddle to the limit, the participants must be able to paddle above 50km a day. The many exposed open water crossings could get rough(they usually do!). Even though we put much pride in looking after each other and helping those that are in need of help, it's expected that the participants are able to take care of themselves (bombproof self-rescue techniques a must). We will however not be paddling fast and we'll stay tight together during the crossings.
In Denmark this trip as earned the reputation of being a trip for very experienced paddlers. The truth is that technically the trip is pretty easy with no tide and little currents. However the participants must be in good paddling shape and be comfortable with long open crossings in strong wind.
It doesn't cost anything to participate. No facilities are provided anyway. However do bring some danish money for the occational ice cream and pub visits. Likewise we may have to pay for using a tentsite this year.
Everybody carries his/her own gear, food and water etc. We'll be able to refill water-containers a couple of times, but it's a good idea to bring +8L of water.
The exact meeting place is in Hov at the beach just north of the ferry berth at the harbour. There's a parking lot just next to the place. It might be a good idea to arrive the evening before, and sleep in the cars or at the beach. The participants should be ready to launch their kayaks at 9 o'clock.
There's a large heated waiting room 50m from the parking-lot with toilets and water.
We will continusly monitor the weather and the weather-forecast and change the route accordingly. Don't be supprised if the route is radically changed. The trip will be challeging but not suicidal. If things looks too rough for long crossings, then we'll simply forget about Samsø and paddle north or south along the coast.
In case you carry a GPS, you might want to preload it with some waypoints of the area.
